Vulcan performs flypast at unveiling of Falklands memorial
The UK's last airworthy Vulcan has performed a flypast at a new memorial commemorating the 255 British servicemen who died in the Falklands War.
More than 600 veterans and their families attended a special service at the National Memorial Arboretum is Alrewas, Staffordshire, today.
The XH558 bomber was flown by Flight Lieutenant Martin Withers DFC #8211; the pilot who led the Black Buck 1 raid on Port Stanley's airfield in 1982.
The memorial has been unveiled 30 years after the British task force landings on the disputed South Atlantic Islands.
It features a 7ft-foot high curved wall of rugged Cotswold stone facing a rock from the Falklands - to reflect the Falklands' landscape - two granite benches and a number of granite plaques, including one engraved with the names of three Falkland Islanders who lost their lives.
It has been built to honour the task force and to remember the servicemen and merchant seamen who gave their lives in the conflict.
The service was organised by The South Atlantic Medal Association 1982, a charity which supports veterans of the Falklands Conflict.
The Vulcan XH558 was based at RAF Waddington during its working life but now resides at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster, where it took off for a successful 90-minute test flight last month.
It is also expected to take part in the Waddington Air Show on June 30 and July 1 during the year of the 60th anniversary of the first Vulcan flight, which took place on August 30, 1952.
